Media buying vs paid advertising: what's the difference?

Inico Media team · · 3 min read

If you're shopping for marketing help, you'll hear two phrases that sound like the same thing: paid advertising and media buying. They overlap, but they aren't identical, and knowing the difference helps you ask better questions.

Paid advertising is the category

Paid advertising means paying to put your message in front of people: search ads on Google, social ads on Meta or TikTok, display banners, sponsored posts. It's the 'what'.

Media buying is the craft inside it

Media buying is the work of deciding where your budget goes and getting the most from it. That means choosing platforms and audiences, setting budgets and bids, buying the placements, then watching the numbers and shifting money toward what works.

Where creative and strategy fit

Strong media buying still needs good creative and a clear offer. An ad can be perfectly placed and still fall flat if the message or the landing page misses. That's why we treat buying, creative and tracking as one system.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Who decides how the budget is split across platforms, and how often is it reviewed?
  • How will you track leads, not just clicks?
  • What will I see in your reports each month?
  • Who owns the ad accounts?

At Inico, media buying is part of our Growth & Lead Generation System, alongside landing pages, creative and tracking. If you'd like help deciding what fits, book a discovery call.
